As you may know, on September 7, 2017, Equifax, one of the three major credit-reporting agencies in the United States, announced a massive consumer data breach that potentially affects 143 million Americans.  The information accessed primarily includes names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses, and in some instances, driver’s license and credit card numbers.  

This was NOT a compromise of BankPacific’s computer systems and no information was taken from our systems.  We want to share information about the Equifax breach to ensure that you are aware of the issue and encourage you to take the proper precautions to reduce the chances of fraud and identity theft.  We want to help inform you as to what you should do to determine if your personal information might have been compromised and what options you have to protect yourself going into the future.

How can I find out if I was impacted?

Equifax has set up a special website where you can find out if they believe your information was compromised.  Go to https://www.equifaxsecurity2017.com/.

 

What should I do if I feel I may have been impacted?

If you feel you may have been impacted, you may consider putting a temporary fraud alert or credit freeze on your file at each of the credit bureaus.  See sites for details and costs.

 

  • Temporary Fraud Alert

Placing a temporary fraud alert on your credit report makes it harder for someone to open accounts in your name.  When you alert one bureau, it will automatically alert the other two. 

 

  • Credit Freeze

Placing a freeze on your credit file will prevent any individual or company from accessing your credit data.  Before deciding to place a credit freeze on your accounts, consider your personal situation.  Will you apply for credit soon, apply to rent an apartment or think you might need quick credit in an emergency?  To place a credit freeze you must contact each Credit Bureau individually and request the action.  A freeze remains in place until you remove it.  Each Credit Bureau will have more information on their freeze option.  Be aware that there may be a fee to freeze your information.  You may freeze/unfreeze the file at any time but you will need to submit your request with each credit bureau directly. 

 

 

What other options do I have?  

By federal law, you are entitled to check your free credit report and there are various free and fee-paid fraud monitoring services.  Equifax is offering one year of free credit monitoring and other services, whether or not your information was exposed.  To sign up go to, https://www.equifaxsecurity2017.com/.  We also encourage you to visit www.identitytheft.gov or www.consumerfinance.gov for more information on recovering from Identity Theft.

 

Whether you have been affected or not, you should monitor your financial accounts regularly for fraudulent transactions.  Use our BankPacific Online Banking or Mobile Banking applications to keep a close eye on your accounts.  In addition to continuously monitoring your accounts, you should strengthen your passwords where necessary and be extra cautious with any unsolicited email, phone call or other attempts to gain access your personal information.
